One Cut Above with Lazerian

Lazerian is the brainchild of Manchester-born furniture designer and experimentalist Liam Hopkins who, with fellow designers Richard Sweeney and Jason Chart Davies and under the supervision of pet mascot Gerald, offers a small yet perfectly formed range of innovative hand-finished structural home objects and furniture pieces, predominantly birch plywood-based, with top-end machine-cutting technology as the common denominator, illustrated here by the lampshade range that will be sure to get the full attention of residents and their guests and stimulate those dinner party conversations; we couldn't resist adding the pièce de résistance at the end of this feature, namely the surprising cardboard-made "Radiolarian Sofa", inspired by structural forms in nature - most noticeably a wasp nest - and by the crystalline bone structure of those microscopic sea organisms that go by the name of... radiolaria.

Functional Design: 1930s Coat & Umbrella Stand

It is universally accepted that a coat stand is first and foremost a functional item of furniture, hardly producing enthused glances and column inches, despite being redefined by contemporary designers via man-made materials, challenging geometrical shapes and bold acid colours; however we will make a note of the one here as it strikes the right balance between functionality, personality, integrity, timelessness and style.

Osterlen Table and Chair

Here is a gorgeous ash chair and table duo designed by French designer Inga Sempe for Swedish furniture company, Garsnas. It is called 'Osterlen' - named after the town in southeast Sweden where this furniture is made. I love the simplicity and the well composed U-cuts of these pieces. Family Chairs from Design House Stockholm

Here are the cool Family Chairs from Design House Stockholm. Designed by Lina Nordqvist, these chairs are based on the traditional Swedish stickback chairs - with a twist. Family Chairs won the Accent on Design Award, New York in August 2009 and are available in natural wood or black lacquered finish. I like how these chairs look good collectively as well as being unique individually.

There is a great shop here in Wellington called Zinc+. It is an industrial and vintage furniture specialty store located in Thorndon. Owners Trish and Dave have created a unique mix of products sourced from their trips to Europe, especially France, combined with their own designed and NZ made furniture. Their specialty is Zinc topped tables - inspired by the French peasant tables. They can be made to any size and have a variety of leg options. Today I visited the office of fellow colleagues and architects, Lou Ryan-Wright and Justin Wright, aka Assembly Architecture Ltd. They have started a new furniture range and have created the Stackweave System. These shelves are created with interlocking panels that are joined to form modules. I like especially like the birch plywood version with the white laminate surface. Stackweave is available in several sizes from bedside tables through to the large 2m x 2m square as seen above.
