Wishlist: 50's Tulle Prom Dress

I have always wanted a tulle prom dress! Frothy, pretty, girly, decadent pieces; always filled with vintage memories as they were always bought for a special occasion! Mmmm.....

I owned once once (it was given to me by a friend of a friend in a garbage bag full of vintage clothes that were headed for the dump), but it had a 23" waist and I do not have a 23" waist! So I consigned it at Ragpickers while I worked there and sold it to a young girl who wore it to her grade 8 grad. That made me happy!

Anyway, I still want one (that fits me!)! I don't know where I'd wear it. I do have the Christmas party for work to go to in December, but what are the odds I'll find one that a) I can afford b) fits me and c) I absolutely cannot live without before December 5th?
Who knows, miracles do happen!

I would gladly take these two confections any day of the week:

*Sigh*
I'll likely end up wearing something out of my closet (which is kindof like a small vintage clothing store anyway! haha!).

New and Improved Header

I'm pretty proud of my new header.

I know it's not as fancy as some other bloggers headers out there, but I'm pretty computer illiterate and I managed to make it look nice all by myself!!

Also, I wanted to share that those are not just random images posted up there. Those are all close up photos of the prints on some of my vintage dresses!

My hope is to make more headers like this one and rotate them.

I'll leave this one up for a while of course because I'm so proud and it's so pretty! Enjoy!

Inspiration: Some Girls Wander by Mistake

I can only hope that you are familiar with Emily Martin and her wonderful (and whimsical!) Etsy shop The Black Apple.
Well if you aren't, I insist you follow the link above and head over there right now (or after you read my post! haha!). You would have to be a cold hearted monster not to be instantly smitten with her amazing art. I was immediatly taken with it (although I am personally a fan of whimsical oddites!).

But I digress...this is after all a fashion blog.

Emily also has her own fashion blog: Some Girls Wander by Mistake.

I am continually inspired by Emily's outfits! I love the way she layers and mixes fabrics! I always wait eagerly for a new post. I could go on, but I'll let a few of my favorites speak for themselves:

(all photos borrowed from Some Girls Wander by Mistake)

Sorry I posted so many! I honestly had a hard time choosing! Go check her out! She's so cute and lovely!

Also go check out Emily's other blog (Inside a Black Apple).

New Work - Joinery and Soft Furnishings

New Joinery Unit and Modular Sectional Sofa

Toy Drawers

Vintage toy on display

Crafty 'Birthday Hat' on display

Here's a new Joinery Unit that was designed for a new Living room. The client was after a clean and modern Scandinavian look so the unit was kept simple and white. The clients have young children so two large toy drawers were added for an easy tidy up.
The shelves are slowly being filled with books, ceramics, vintage toys and quirky crafts - the white backdrop let these shine.
This open space was ideal for a corner sectional sofa so this Forma 'Pad' sofa was purchased. It is so big and soft - ideal to sink into and watch TV. The chocolate brown fabric has a soft grey lattice pattern and is a great contrast to the crisp white. There is good space in front for a coffee table (which is chosen - just letting the budget catch up!)

Outfits: Madonna Wannabe?

This is a really popular silhouette right now. That short full skirt with a cinched belt and any sort of cropped or tucked in top (maybe even a blazer or a jacket on top?) Designers, fashion bloggers, store windows: it's everywhere.
It's no wonder really, It's pretty classic when you get right down to it.
When I wear this I always feel like it's my 2009 does 1980's, does 1950's outfit. Haha!
Actually with the bow in my hair I kinda felt like a very paired down Madonna circa 1980.
No matter what, I love this skirt and will wear it to death!

Hair Bow: Satin sash from a long forgotten dress
Necklace: Vintage (was Grandma's)
T-Shirt: Urban Planet
Belt: Laura
Skirt: Vintage (Oscar de la Renta!)
Tights: Good ol' Faithful Indestructables!
Shoes: Spring

Zuppa Toscana

This post will hopefully convince Arizona's weather to turn fall-y so I can enjoy incredible soups like this WITHOUT running the air conditioning!

Whenever I go to Olive Garden, I always have to get this soup. It's so insanely fantastically delicious. Several years ago, I had a wicked craving for this soup but couldn't go get my Olive Garden fix. I decided to look it up online. I wasn't expecting to find a recipe nearly as good, but I found one! I love it even more, because it costs way less to make and I get several meals of this soup instead of just a single bowl.

The only problem I had with this recipe was that the original said you can use spinach or kale. The very first time I made it, I used spinach. It. was. disgusting. The spinach got completely slimy in the soup and didn't hold up well at all for leftovers. So do NOT use spinach as a substitution. It's gotta be kale.

Now that I'm on blood thinner medication, I have to be super careful about eating foods high in Vitamin K. When the pharmacist tole me that kale has the highest Vitamin K out of any of the dark greens, my mind instantly started mourning the fact that I won't be able to eat this soup as much as I normally do in the winter. Well, as much as I used to eat it in the winter, before I moved to the gosh dang desert.

Ingredients:
1 pound hot style bulk sausage
1 1/4 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
4 slices bacon, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
1 large onion, diced
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
5 cans chicken broth
6 potatoes, cubed
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 bunch kale

Cook sausage and red pepper flakes. Drain excess fat and remove sausage from pan. Using the same pan, cook bacon. Remove bacon, leaving a few tablespoons of drippings in the pan. Cook onion and garlic in bacon drippings until tender. Add chicken broth and potatoes. Cook for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to medium, then add cream and sausage. Simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in kale just before serving. Serve with rolls or breadsticks!
What's your favorite soup?
