Kuschelsamstag.

Jetzt gehts erst einmal wieder zurück ins Bettchen.

inspiration for the weekend.

100 hits!

Haha, a small but significant milestone. The thing with blogging is that in some way, it’s like running your own online business. To get your message out there in the plethora of musings and ego trips you have to actively work on generating a buzz through the right networks. Forums, other blogs, directories...you have to spend time promoting yourself (or get a budget so someone else can do it for you!)

Anyway, to my 100 readers so far, thanks! Leave comments, love and feedback.

Product - Klippan Sweden

Here's some more Klippan images to admire. There is a mix of traditional Swedish styles and some retros 70's patterns - however, all very luxurious and available to purchase through Charlotte Minty Design.

Product - Klippan Kids

As an Interior Designer, I have access to many products which I can sell to my clients at better prices than retail. One product that I particularly like is Klippan.
Klippan is a Swedish textile range which promotes traditional techniques and Scandinavian designers to produce gorgeous and quality home products - read about them here.
I have recently purchased some red Bruno Bear cotton chenille baby blankets (images above). They are also available in blue, pink and green.
If you would like to purchase one of these or any of the other Klippan range, let me know.

Sushi Stack - cause nothing looks as impressive as stacked food

Gourmet Inspired Tip: I adapted this recipe from a picture my flatmate showed me of a sushi stack, I think it came from Women's Weekly Magazine. And my theory has always been that there's nothing as impressive as stacked food.

Taste wise, it's not really much...just a big sushi patty without some of the elegance and daintiness of more mini sized sushi (although my friend who never ever eats sushi actually tried it and thought it was pretty good...he loved the texture of the flying fish roe which he had never tried before). I guess this is just a general lesson that looks can be deceiving. That's the thing with cooking - there's the art part to it, but it ultimately comes down to taste. That's what they say on MasterChef, "it all comes down to the dish you cooked." Meanwhile, how many times have you been deceived by food that looks amazing but tastes like nothing much?

But I still think that there's nothing that looks more impressive than stacked food.

Sushi Stack

Ingredients

1 cup sushi rice
1/2 cup water
2 1/2 tbs rice vinegar
2 tsp sugar
Pinch salt
1 tsp sesame oil
4 tbs flying fish roe (you can get this at an Asian supermarket)
1/2 cucumber, peeled into strips with a peeler
1/4 avocado, thinly sliced
2 piece of Nori (seaweed) trimmed to the size of a small ramekin
Sprinkle of sesame seeds

Method

To make the sushi rice, wash and drain the rice until the water runs clear. Cook the rice, by bringing the water and rice to a boil and then covering and letting simmer for 12 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes. You can prepare your other ingredients while the rice is cooking.

Mix vinegar, sugar, sesame oil and salt into a dressing. Pour over rice and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon.

Let the rice mixture cool to a lukewarm temperature. (I stuck the rice in a bowl and put it in a cool fan forced oven.)

In a small ramekin, or other appropriately shaped mould, layer your ingredients, first with a base of rice, then a layer of flying fish roe, a layer of shaved cucumber and a layer of avocado. Top with a sheet of nori and finish with another layer of rice on top.

Flip your stack over onto a plate. Lift up the ramekin mould to reveal your stack. Top with sesame seeds and a couple of slivers of cucumber. Serve

Important: Contrary to instinct, serve your stack with fork and knife, not chopsticks! The layer of seaweed and cucumbers are difficult to cut through without a knife to help.

My favorite cookbooks

Today I want to share with you my favorite cookbooks. I have a few smaller ones that I occasionally use for a thing or two, and then I have two that I use these almost every single time I cook. This first one we got for our wedding from my mother-in-law. It has a lot of fancier (not harder, just fancier) recipes. There are still your basic recipes, like pancakes, waffles, meatloaf, spaghetti sauce, etc, but a lot of it is stuff that you just don't cook everyday. Still, I love this cookbook and highly recommend it.

This next one I just got a couple of days ago (from Barnes and Noble for around $30), and I already love it. It's so inclusive and awesome! Each recipe is tried many, many times, and they even make/test the recipes on the lowest grade of cookware and appliances out there to make sure the recipe will work for everyone every single time. It also lists substitutions, best brands to use for each recipe, etc. And it has a lot of useful sections, such as what kitchen tools you should have, what items to stock in your pantry, etc.

If you add these two to your collection, you will be good to go! I have wasted a lot of money over the years buying cookbooks that I never use. These you will use, all the time. Well worth the money!

What's your favorite cookbook?

Meal Plan Monday

I'm starting to get really excited to make my meal plans now! Because here in blistering Arizona, it's finally starting to cool off a little bit! We've been in the 60's at night and stay in the 80's or lower during the day. I've had the air conditioning completely off and all the windows open for the last 2 weeks straight. There's such a delicious breeze blowing through, and it's fabulous! So instead of shying away from cooking for fear of heating up the house, now my head is spinning with all kinds of recipes I want to try. Aren't you excited?! ;-)

This week has already been really messed up, and none of my meals have worked out the way I'd planned. We've had errands to run and lots of things come up, so we've eaten out way more than we normally do. So instead of giving you a day-by-day breakdown like I usually do, I'll just make a list of all the meals I'm supposed to make this week. :-)

Chicken enchiladas with cheesy rice and corn casserole
Grilled cheese and tomato soup
Big Mac meatloaf and mashed potatoes
Lemon Linguine
Baked potatoes and salad
Spaghetti
Easy cheesy meat and potatoes

What are your favorite fall recipes that you long for all year?
Inspire us! :-)
