A Short Absence and Some New Stuff

Sorry for being gone for a week or so. I've been knee deep in projects: planning my Mom's 50th birthday party which I'm hosting at my house this weekend and sewing curtains for my living room and dining room.
I did however have time to shop! Here's a few things I bought.

I bought this dress at Rags. It's so adorable! It's gingham. Very Dorothy. So I thought I would pair it with some wicked red shoes! (The shoes are also new!)

Red Enamel Flower Earrings: Ricki's Sample Sale
50's Blue Gingham Dress: Ragpickers
Red Patent Belt: Thrifted
Red Strappy Flower Pumps: TownShoes
Red Wicker Clutch: Value Village

I LOVE this outfit!! It's all new (minus the shoes). I'm dying to wear it somewere. Just waiting for the right occasion. The hat was a steal at $16. The beach bag was $5!!

40's Straw Hat: Ragpickers
White Rose Earrings: Aldo
50's Pink and White Striped Dress: Ragpickers
50's Lace Crinoline: Vintage Glory
Wedges: George (Walmart)
Wicker Oversized Beach Bag: Goodwill

The irony of this super beachy/summery outfit is that it was pouring cats and dogs outside while I was taking the photos! haha! Our weather this summer has been so weird! Summer hot and humid!! Usually we get hot and dry! Oh well!
I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

MasterChef, Jamie Oliver and Dressing the board

As many of you are probably aware, I live in Australia and am a big big fan of Australian reality show, MasterChef. Amateur cooks compete in these amazing challenges recreating siganture dishes from some of the world's biggest culinary icons - Matt Moran, Kylie Kwong, Neil Perry - and at the end one is left standing to be named the MasterChef and gets a publishing deal, money and prestige. Anyway if you haven't seen it - you should - the eps are here - http://www.masterchef.com.au

Anyhow, this week, the show's being filmed in London, home to some of the biggest cooking names around - including of course, Jamie Oliver. I've seen his shows, read about his philanthropic work - he was showcased in a cover story I had worked on at my old job. To see this guy doing his thing on ANOTHER show though I one he's not the producer of - was actually quite phenomenal. You can see Jamie is the real deal, passionate - bursting with energy - completely eccentric and running at 50 million miles a minute!

One of the interesting concepts he presented was a new way to cook steak - he called it "dressing the board" - quite a simple concept but really brought out some fresh new flavours. Here's what we tried:

Ingredients:

1 thick juicy 200 g sirloin steak
3 tbs mint, finely chopped
2 small chilis finely chopped
1 tsp mince garlic
2 tbs olive oil
1 tbs balsamic vinegar

Large wood chopping board

Method:

Cook the steak in a pan as desired. While the steak is cooking prepare your dressing ingredients and mix the mint and chili well on the board. Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic and stir through. When the steak is cooked take it straight out the pan, place it on the board with your dressing and coat liberally. As the steak starts to cool and seal off, it'll take on the flavours of the board - so you have a well flavoured piece of gorgeous and juicy steak - without the typical burning of the marinade! Genius!

Family Chairs from Design House Stockholm

Here are the cool Family Chairs from Design House Stockholm. Designed by Lina Nordqvist, these chairs are based on the traditional Swedish stickback chairs - with a twist. Family Chairs won the Accent on Design Award, New York in August 2009 and are available in natural wood or black lacquered finish. I like how these chairs look good collectively as well as being unique individually.

Garlic and Ranch Turkey Burgers

I apologize for the extended absence! I was able to take a spur-of-the-moment trip to Idaho to visit my family for 10 days and had the BEST time! My hubby stayed home with our older kiddos, and I took off with our 3 year old. It's taken me the last 3 days to settle into being back home. Grocery shopping may have to wait until Friday, so things may not be back to normal around here until next week.

But for now, I was able to find an old recipe that I tried a while ago but forgot to post. I found it from a cooking blog called Mommy Meals, and she found it from Allrecipes. I didn't change a thing in this recipe. My hubby was really skeptical about the ground turkey. We've only ever tried ground turkey once before in a chili recipe, and it was TERRIBLE. But now I know it was the recipe's fault and not the turkey! These were really tasty!

Ingredients:
1 pound ground turkey
1 package ranch dressing mix
1 egg
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper

Preheat your grill on medium-high heat, and lightly oil the grate. Mix ingredients together and form into patties. Cook until well-done, about 5 minutes per side. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 165 degrees.

We topped ours with mayo, lettuce, tomato, bacon and avocado. Delish!

Are you a ground turkey fan?
What's your favorite ground turkey recipe?
