Ajahn Brahmavamso Mahathera (known to most as Ajahn Brahm) was born Peter Betts in London, United Kingdom on 7 August 1951. Early life
Peter Betts came from a working-class background and went to Latymer Upper School. He won a scholarship to study Theoretical physics at Cambridge University in the late 1960s. After graduating from Cambridge he taught in high school for one year before traveling to Thailand to become a monk and train with the Ajahn Chah Bodhinyana Mahathera.

Brahm was ordained in Bangkok at the age of twenty-three by the Abbot of Wat Saket. He subsequently spent nine years studying and training in the forest meditation tradition under Ajahn Chah.

Achievements
Whilst still a junior monk, Brahm was asked to undertake the compilation of an English-language guide to the Buddhist monastic code - the vinaya - which later became the basis for monastic discipline in many Theravadan monasteries in Western countries. Currently Brahm is the Abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery, in Serpentine, Western Australia,[2] the Spiritual Director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia, Spiritual Adviser to the Buddhist Society of Victoria, Spiritual Adviser to the Buddhist Society of South Australia, Spiritual Patron of the Buddhist Fellowship in Singapore, Spiritual Patron of the Bodhikusuma Centre in Sydney.

Curry Mussels

This particular dish is inspired by Luke Nguyen from Red Lantern in Surry Hills. I have always loved mussels - the meat is so sweet, juicy and succulent and the local mussels in Sydney are always plump and beautiful. You could - and probably should - make your own curry paste with chilli and shrimp paste etc. But in a pinch, the red thai curry paste from coles (get the paste not the sauce form) will do well. This is a superb winter dish.

--

Ingredients:

1 kg fresh mussels
1/2 stick lemon grass - cut in 3
250 mL coconut milk
155 mL coconut cream
2 tbs thai red curry paste (add more to taste)
2 bunch baby bok choy chopped
1 chilli - chopped
2 cloves garlic - minced
Fresh parsley to taste
1/2 cup chicken stock
2 cups cooked rice for serving

--
Method:

In a large wok or sauce pan, fry the garlic to release the aroma. Add stock and bring to a simmer.

Add curry paste, baby bok choy, chilli and lemon grass and let simmer 3-4 minutes. Add coconut milk and cream and bring to boil. Reduce heat.

Add mussels and cover. Cook for about 10 minutes. Mussels should just be starting to open. Add sprouts and let cook for additional 3 minutes until all of the mussels have opened. Remove from heat.

Dress with fresh parsley and stir through. Serve in bowls over fluffy cooked rice.

Master Chef Inspired Pavlova

Marshmallowy Goodness.

For Anzac Day - I decided to try and make a Pavlova, having seen Donna Hay's recipe on Masterchef. I mean what better way to celebrate a great Australian public holiday than with a great Australian dessert?

The only problem - small tiny problem - was that I didn't own a beater. And when I saw those dreaded instructions: "whip egg whites to glossy, satiny peaks" I knew I was in trouble.

About 30 minutes of hard core whipping later - I had my glossy peaks and my pavlova in the oven. Feeling quite proud of myself, I went on to read about the topping.

"300 mL cream, well whipped"

Crap.

(turned out okay, but definitely investing the $30 in a mixer!)

--

Ingredients:

4 egg whites
300 g caster sugar
1 tsp vinegar
3 tbs corn flour
1 tsp vanilla
-- and if you don't have a mixer - a fork and some strong forearms!

Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Lay out a piece of baking paper on a baking tray and draw a 20 cm circle, if desired.

Whip egg whites until soft peaks form. Slowly sift in sugar and continue beating until the peaks are stiff and satiny. Mix in corn flour. Fold vanilla and vinegar into the mixture.

Mound your mixture into the centre of your baking paper and bake for 25 minutes. Turn off the oven and allow pavolova to cool in the oven.

For the topping, use about 300 ml of well whipped cream and seasonal berries, kiwis, passionfruit etc.

Heutiger Tag:
Naja, werd nächste Woche nochmal in Ruhe losziehen,
wenn die Touris alle wieder zu Hause sind.
Habt einen schönen Abend,
au revoir!

Old-Timey Modeling

I am a volunteer model for the Canadian Costume Museum of Canada. Last night I drove an hour outside of Winnipeg for a fashion show in Morris for the Manitoba Women's Institute Cenntenial Celebration.

We ended up being an hour behind schedule (there were some looong speeches last night!) and I got into bed at midnight (which is far far too late for little ol' me!), but I had a great time!!

Here's the proof:

A Very Happy Lisa Indeed!!

Isn't it awesome! Most of the costumes we wear for the fashion show are repros, but this is an original 1929 blue crepe dress! I could wear it every day!!!

I had two other outfits for the show, but when we're up and rolling there is no time for photos unfortunatly. I also wore a 1947 cream bengaline wedding dress with sweetheart neckline and veil and a 1975 light blue swiss dot full length dress. They were  also pretty awesome, but this blue crepe was my favorite.

I know I've been away, but I've got some exciting things to share with you this weekend! Stay Tuned!!

292 - Gib

Double layer of Gib on the ceiling for the lower apartment.
Builder Euan at work.
I visited 292 yesterday to check out the Gib board installation.
Euan was working on the ceiling of the lower apartment, which for noise control requires two layers of Noiseline Gib. The walls will follow and hopefully we'll have the presence of the plasterer next week.

Inspiration - Chocolate Brown Squares

From India Hicks 'Island Life'
Brown and white square flooring
Mosaic tiles from Bisazza
After looking at India Hick's interiors last week, I had been admiring the chocolate and white pattern on her chairs. Surprisingly I came across the similar pattern as flooring. Wondering if I could do this pattern with tiles, I found the Bisazza example. It's rather effective, isn't it? I wonder if my client will like this idea...

Meine Leseempfehlung an euch,
ich habe es gestern angefangen und es ist ein wunderbares Buch!

Working Girl from Vogue

Is this what I'm supposed to look like when I'm working?
I had a chuckle when I saw this Patrick Demarchelier photo from the Habitually Chic blog. It is from a Vogue editorial of a 'Working Girl'. It's clear that this lady with all her plans and building models is suppose to be an Architect. I know a lot of architects and designers and (although some very stylish) we certainly don't look as relaxed as this...
