"There are drawn from the heart of suffering itself the means of inspiration and survival."
~ Winston Churchill
I remember reading some time ago on a study of longevity in humans. There was a large body of scientific reasons why some people are of long duration, but of course, while various diets, health regimens, and regional or ethnic differences are often linked to living longer, is a cause very difficult and effect relationship to determine why there are so many other variables involved. However, the study I remember not to spend so much time on health and diet, as many others. The researchers spent time observing and interviewing a number of people living always time to determine what factors are common to these very different people share.
Know what the single biggest factor that all shared - the characteristic that the researchers determined played the major role in their lives long? It was not a specific food or faith or daily activity. E 'was simply the way these people dealt with adversity.
The ways in which these people have faced adversity vary. Some had great religious faith, others had an insatiable taste for life, and others had a strong will that could and should win and difficulties.
If you think about then this does not seem to make sense. After all, the longer you live then the more you have to overcome adversity. Human life is full of adversity - both physical and emotional - even if the experience of each person varies greatly. To survive adversity, to overcome loss and difficulty, and to succeed in life a person must have inner resources to draw on.
As Oliver Wendell Holmes said: "If I had a formula to work around problems, I would not pass the roundabout. Trouble creates a capacity to handle it. I do not embrace trouble, which is as bad as treating it as an enemy. But I'll tell meeting as a friend, you will see a lot of it is better to be in a position to talk to them. "
Most of us have seen evidence of this, although we have never formulated a scientific theory on it. We have seen the cancer patient diagnosed and therefore not even the doctors live the allotted time. We found that patients diagnosed with heart that survives to expectations - for months and years. What makes the difference between these two groups of people? I think that must be a will to live, an inner resource that one group owns and the other not.
A few weeks ago my left hand my uncle Charles was amputee after being injured in an accident with a log splitter. E 'was devastating to those who love him and certainly no one would have blamed him for becoming depressed and grieving.
But Carl did not choose this path. Instead, he focuses on what it can do, not on what you can not. And if you find something that can not be done with one hand then puts his considerable problem solving skills to work on a solution. He is not simply react to a tragic accident, but proactively looking for solutions.
He is not a saint. He complains of pain and discomfort of the healing process and is sometimes frustrated by trial and error of its process of problem-solving, but not waste time feeling sorry for himself. Knows he has received many gifts and those gifts include the ability to solve problems and overcome adversity.
I can only hope that when my time to face the adversities that may arise with more energy, determination and confidence.
