Microsoft launches IE6 countdown website to say Good Bye Posted: 06 Mar 2011 01:43 AM PST With the Internet Explorer 9 RC already released and the final version in the works, Microsoft has launched a countdown website to speed up the demise of its old workhorse IE6. It was released on August 21,2001 and was the default browser to be shipped with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. IE6 has been widely criticized for its poor security and lack of support for modern web standards. Many say that it was IE6 which allowed Mozilla Firefox a foothold in the browser market which was essentially a IE domain. If the users continue to use IE6, more time will be wasted on providing support for a browser whose days are long over. With users wanting HTML5 and other features such as hardware acceleration, IE6 is truly a thing of the past. Its is astonishing to note however that 12% of the world is still using IE6 as of Feb 2011. Among the leading nations are China and India, 34.5% and 12.3% of whose users still use Internet Explorer. Phasing out IE6 will allow various websites to drop support for it, and thereby be able to direct their energies elsewhere. To help in this endeavor check out IE6countdown. Join the cause.
